“You don’t build a business. You build people, and people build the business.”

Now, we all start a company in order to make a living. We want to make money so we can pay for things we want. To make the company grow, we will have to hire employees as we cannot do everything by ourselves. It costs money to hire them. We have to pay them. Usually the boss in the company is supposed to be the person who makes the most of the money. We are used to seeing employees complaining about money when the boss is driving a fancy car. That is how capitalism is supposed to be, right?

But in the beginning , we usually don’t have money to pay for expensive employees. However, when we begin to make some money, we should invest in our company instead of giving ourselves better salaries. An excellent way to make more money is by hiring experienced professionals. It always amazes me when I see other entrepreneurs trying to save money by hiring less experienced professionals. Experienced professionals are expensive, but they get much more done, and by getting work done, you will make more money. Here are three things I’d like to point out why I’d like to hire professionals rather than a newbie.

1. It shows appreciation

When we started out, we really needed a nice logo for our company. I could have done that on my own but I thought we really have to stand out. I did not want to underestimate the power of a logo. I knew it is not just an image. I had to convince and tell my partner why we were spending big money on a mere logo and the branding. We had to make sure we are communicating the right message through a logo. A message of trust and honesty. We hired a well known graphic design company which was way more than our budget but I envisioned our dream with them and they projected us in the exact same way as we wanted. we achieved our goal.

My second experience is we were doing this big catering event and we needed a bigger team. During this time, our company was in growing phase, where we needed new skills. It could be an opportunity for me to have the company’s highest pay, but I didn’t believe it was time for that yet. The professional working for us made more money where they were working before. I sold them a dream, and they believed in me. My goal was for them to have highest pay in their lives and for that I needed to keep reinvesting money in the company and themselves. Although they believed in me, I don’t think they would keep working with me if I didn’t show appreciation for their work. Imagine if I increased my salary much higher than theirs and start spending on fancy stuff. They would notice that and would get disappointed with me acting like that. By showing appreciation, they had much better performance and became evangelists of my company, which was very good when I hired new employees.

2. Investment as it is:

I have done all kinds of odd jobs and internships both paid and unpaid while I was doing college both in Nepal and America. Once I was working in a small company, a start up. It was the founder and three interns working on it. I barely was experienced, and all of a sudden, I had a lot of responsibilities. For me, it was an excellent experience as I had the opportunity to learn many different things. Unfortunately, the startup never succeed.

When I started my own, I didn’t want to hire interns. I have been working with experienced professionals and getting a lot done. I wanted to keep that happening in my company. As I was starting, I didn’t want to hire people with no experience. Yes, yes you might say when we start a company we usually don’t have money to pay for expensive employees. Believe me, in a long run quality over quantity matters.

3. Easier to hire:

As an Entrepreneur, we are always in a lookout for people to hire. People have to earn a living. The best use of money as a motivator is to pay people enough to take the issue of money off the table. When I started out, it was tough to pay for great professionals. We did many jobs ourselves. I was always multi-tasking. I talked to many people, and most of them didn’t want to make less money than they were making. I remember that when I asked a prospective employee how much money he was making, his answer usually shocked me, as I was far from being able to afford that amount. I am very grateful for the employees that believed in me. I am sure they are happy with their decision as they ended up making much more money than they were making before.

After hiring, I had to keep them happy working with me, so they don’t leave. I am proud to say that nobody at my company asked to leave as they did enjoy their work. People feel happy at work when they feel respected, listened to, valued, supported, entrusted with challenging and meaningful jobs that allow them to contribute to the company’s mission with autonomy, power, and integrity. That is what psychologist Abraham Maslow called “self-fulfilling work.” We knew that we needed to hire great professionals to keep growing. Great companies invest in developing their people and in themselves. That was what we did in our company. As Zig Ziglar said: “You don’t build a business. You build people, and people build the business.”

Finally

Yes it is said again and again, entrepreneurship is hard and it’s not for everyone. We gotta be practical when it comes to money and how to manage profits. By hiring professionals, I was able to grow the company faster than others did. Many people believe that capitalists and entrepreneurs can’t profit without exploiting their employees. Fred Kofman, the author of the book The Meaning Revolution, believes that conscious capitalists have the deliberate intention to profit in others’ service. They seek their own well-being by promoting the well-being of their investors, customers, employees, suppliers, and all those who trade with them. They understand that, in doing so, they benefit many others they don’t even know. Their contribution to society is not a collateral benefit of the business, it is their modus operandi.

I rest my case.
